Alexander Zverev Survives Scare Against Rune at ATP Finals

Zverev Wins First Match in Comeback

Alexander Zverev survived a scare from Holger Rune to win his first match at the ATP Finals on Monday. The German saved four match points in a thrilling three-set victory, 6-4, 7-5, 7-6 (6).

Zverev, who is making his return to competitive tennis after a six-month injury layoff, looked rusty at times but showed his fighting spirit to come through in the end. The 24-year-old hit 31 winners and saved 8 of 13 break points.

"It was a great match," said Zverev. "Holger is a great player and he made me work for it today. I'm just happy to get the win and get my first match under my belt."

Rune, who is making his ATP Finals debut, played with great heart and determination. The 18-year-old Dane saved two match points in the second set and had a chance to serve for the match in the third set. But Zverev broke back and eventually won the tiebreaker.

"I'm disappointed with the result, but I'm proud of the way I played," said Rune. "I had my chances and I didn't take them. But I'm going to learn from this and come back stronger."

Zverev will face Daniil Medvedev in his next match on Tuesday. Medvedev is the defending champion and the top seed at this year's event.
